Technology Department

The Mesa Vista Technology Department maintains and supports the technology infrastructure for the entire school district. We believe that access to technology is important for our students. Technology is a powerful tool that enables students to gain hands-on experience and learn skills that will be useful in the workplace.

Our goal is to help the district stay on the cutting edge of technology and to incorporate computer literacy into our curriculum for our staff, students, and the community. For specific technology related questions, please feel free to contact us directly.

Technology Department Update

We had a great year in IT last year within the school district. With over 100 of the older computers replaced throughout the entire district, 50 of these went directly to the student computer labs at the Library and High School tech lab. Many of the older computers were anywhere from 5 to 8 years old and were unable to keep up with the changing technology and needs of the District, Schools, and Students. We have now gone to the latest Microsoft Windows Vista operating systems and Office 2007. This was a major system upgrade and will help the entire staff and student population with being able to communicate more effectively with the rest of the world.

In addition to the new computers the entire network backbone has been reworked, cleaned up, and recertified for faster and cleaner data throughput and communications. Many of the Network servers used throughout the district were upgraded and cleaned up to provide better service and reliability. All servers are now performing at a 99.99% uptime and availability. The older system performance was around 93% just a year and a half ago.

This summer we have been working on replacing another 75 more computers, all of which are for student use. 25 computers will be installed at the New El Rito Elementary computer lab, and 25 will be put in the Ojo Elementary Computer Lab. These will allow us to help the students with Math and Reading based interventions. The last 25 will be installed in the Middle and High School computer lab where we have added several new and exciting programs and opportunities for our students. We now offer Dual Credit (high school and college credit) and distance learning in connection with Northern New Mexico College. Just a few of the new classes being offered this year at the High School are AutoCAD Assisted Drafting, Film Editing, Sound Editing, and Xbox Gaming. This will give the students the opportunity and tools needed to not only keep up with the latest technology, but help them in moving forward.

The district has also been working on upgrading student availability to internet resources through enhanced bandwidth. All internet services district wide have been upgraded for faster speeds and higher availability, something that has proved very difficult to do due to the fact that all of our school locations are very rural and services are limited. This will allow more students to be online doing research and taking online classes at the same time. *NOTE* Please review the Student Usage Policy to see what measures have been put in place to help protect the students while online.

These along with other changes have not only improved our network and computer abilities offered throughout the district, but have put us on the cutting edge of technology. With a lot of hard work and the help of some great Grant opportunities, we have been able to accomplish a great deal while keeping costs to a minimum.

Thank you,
